5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 – why the Powerball winnings proved the ‘experts’ wrong

On 1 December, South Africa held its national PowerBall lottery with a jackpot of almost 114 million South African Rand. The winners were 20 people who simultaneously guessed an unusual winning combination of six numbers. The rules of the lottery require entrants to select five prime numbers from 1 to 50 as well as one additional number – the PowerBall – from 1 to 20. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 42,375,200.

As you can see from the video broadcast of the draw on December 1, numbers 8, 5, 9, 7, 6 and then the PowerBall of 10 hit the jackpot first.

On the same day South Africa’s largest lottery operator, Ithuba Holding, congratulated the “20 new multi-millionaires” on winning the raffle on Twitter. The company also commented on the winning sequence:

“[The] numbers that came out may seem like an unexpected combination, but we see many lottery participants betting exactly on them.”

Each winner won R5.7 million. A video posted on Twitter by lottery organisers says the winners live in seven provinces in South Africa (and there are nine provinces in total). This includes eight people who live in Gauteng, where Johannesburg, the largest city, is located. Another 79 lottery participants won R6283 each by guessing a sequence of 5 to 9, but no PowerBall.

However, this tactic of choosing numbers on the lottery ticket is more of an exception to the rule. It’s almost impossible to win prizes in such a way, and even if you do win, the jackpot will still need to be shared by a rather large number of people. So here are some useful tips to increase your chances of winning significantly.
