Hawks set up Special Team to Investigate Lottery Corruption
One of the senior officers was removed from the newly formed Hawks unit after it became known that her husband was involved in a lottery corruption scheme. According to Hawks Speaker Colonel Katlego Mogale, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation began investigating lottery corruption schemes after receiving a request from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition in September.
Mogale confirmed that all corruption cases are now redirected from police departments to Hawks:
“During investigations, when there are overlapping or similar cases that merit consolidation, the cases are brought together and dealt with by a team of investigators.”
However, there is a curious case with Katlego Mogale. The GroundUp portal found out that the colonel was dismissed because her husband is being investigated into corruption schemes. Asked if there was an investigation into the colonel’s husband underway, Mogale responded:
“Like any other member of the DPCI, should allegations of any kind be levelled against a member such will be investigated. In this case, if there was an investigation into the colonel’s husband underway, Mogale responded: “Like any other member of the DPCI should allegations of any kind be levelled against a member such will be investigated. Disciplinary matters are treated internally and should there be evidence that any member contravened the Regulations and Policies of the DPCI and the broader service such will be dealt with in-house.”
The Hawks investigation began after a Denzhe Primary Care dossier was handed over to the police, which received R27.5 million in lottery grants to build a rehabilitation hospital for drug addicts near Pretoria. The dossier was compiled by investigators appointed by DTIC minister Ebrahim Patel.
